PGWP Eligibility Requirements

What you need to qualify for Post-Graduation Work Permit

Graduated from Eligible DLI

Must have graduated from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with a program eligible for PGWP.

Key Details:

  • Public post-secondary institutions
  • Private institutions authorized to grant degrees
  • Private institutions with programs leading to degree

Full-time Study Duration

Must have completed full-time study for at least 8 months in a program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate.

Key Details:

  • Minimum 8 months full-time study
  • Program must lead to credential
  • Accelerated programs may qualify

Application Timing

Must apply within 180 days of receiving final grades or official notification of program completion.

Key Details:

  • 180-day deadline from final grades
  • Valid study permit when applying
  • Cannot apply if study permit expired

Important PGWP Limitations

  • • You can only receive ONE PGWP in your lifetime
  • • PGWP cannot be renewed or extended
  • • Must apply from within Canada (with some exceptions)
  • • Distance learning programs are generally not eligible
