What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is Canada's flagship immigration system for skilled workers. Launched in 2015, it manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

It's a points-based system where candidates are ranked against each other using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Higher scores increase your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Eligibility Criteria

To enter the Express Entry pool, you must meet the eligibility criteria for at least one of the three federal economic immigration programs:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For skilled workers with foreign work experience.
• Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For skilled tradespeople with a valid job offer or certificate of qualification.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

Your CRS score is crucial. It's calculated based on various factors:

• Core human capital factors (age, education, language, Canadian work experience)
• Spouse or common-law partner factors (if applicable)
• Skill transferability factors (education and work experience combinations)
• Additional points (provincial nomination, valid job offer, Canadian education, French language proficiency, sibling in Canada)

A provincial nomination alone adds 600 points to your CRS score, virtually guaranteeing an ITA.

Step-by-Step Application Process

1. Determine Eligibility: Use IRCC's online tools to check if you meet the minimum requirements for any of the Express Entry programs.
2. Gather Documents: Collect all necessary documents, including language test results (IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, TCF), Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), and proof of funds.
3. Create Express Entry Profile: Submit your profile online, providing details about your skills, education, language ability, and work experience.
4. Receive Invitation to Apply (ITA): If your CRS score is high enough in a round of invitations, you will receive an ITA.
5. Submit Permanent Residence Application: Once you receive an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residence with all supporting documents.
6. Application Processing: IRCC processes your application, conducts background checks, and may request additional information or an interview.
7. Decision and Landing: If approved, you will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and can finalize your move to Canada.
